Help Dr. Goddess Help Ms. Freedom

By Dr. Goddess Jun 25, 2011
Help Dr. Goddess Help Ms. Freedom They say “A friend in need is a friend, indeed” eh? Well… For those who’d like to meet my Mom, you can read about how phenomenal she is here when I wished her a Happy Birthday. Ms. Freedom was in a car accident and I need your help now.   "Ms. Freda" by Erin Perry I love this picture and it will be used in “She Put a Hammer in My Hand”. My mother’s story is the basis of my next play, which is entitled, “She Put a Hammer in My Hand”. She is a Handy Ma’am who built up our home when my brother and I were children; but she is older and less strong now, so her eyes are bigger than what her body can physically complete for a construction project. The investment she made in her home—and us—drives me to complete this project for her, so she can live out the...

Ask a Sista at Netroots Nation!

By Dr. Goddess Jun 17, 2011
Ask a Sista at Netroots Nation! Dr. Goddess is Speaking!!   Ask a Sista Panel (L to R: Chloe, Janee, Zerlina, Jenifer, Dr. Goddess and Cheryl) fstv2 on livestream.com. Broadcast Live Free Mi Gente, I love Netroots Nation. When I was asked to be a part of a panel at Netroots Nation in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 2009, I had no idea my life would be changed (again). We were talking Hip Hop and Politics with Rev. Yearwood of the Hip Hop Caucus, Davey D of Hard Knock Radio, Paradise Gray of X-Clan, Jasiri X of Real Talk XPress and, yours truly, Dr. Goddess of the Revelations Blog and Dr. Goddess Arts, Education and Management Co. (academics always pick long titles, forgive us!). Our panel was phenomenal, as was the entire conference of progressive folks who work online and offline to improve the human race. 2010 in Las Vegas was even better because I understood...

Shaq's Retirement Creates Basketball Wives Debate on Twitter As you all know, Shaq announced his retirement on Twitter. This is the debate that ensued after a comment about Shaunie O’Neal, Shaq’s ex-wife and the producer of the hit VH-1 Series, “Basketball Wives”: As it turns out, Shaq isn’t Superman, afterall… Did you like this? Twitter Beef in Blackademia Begets Broader Barack Obama Debate

By Dr. Goddess May 18, 2011
Twitter Beef in Blackademia Begets Broader Barack Obama Debate   @InnyVinny's Brown Twitter Birds Don't Die, they Multiply! I love Twitter. There’s nothing else like it at the moment. This particular Twitter Beef has been going on for well over a year and it all started at Princeton University, with inter-office politics in the Department of Africana Studies. There are so many layers to this story and I don’t portend to know (or even care about) every angle. Today, however, a fuller debate carried over onto Twitter from Television, which is both odd and, as an aside, the source of much of the problem. I decided to “chirpstory” it because I believe that the Twitter discussion, overall, is better than any one individual’s timeline and there is much learning to be had. View it for yourself. I embedded it here because I really want your commentary. I want to...

Come Flash Mob Dance with Dr. Goddess for Pgh CASA!

By Dr. Goddess May 07, 2011
Come Flash Mob Dance with Dr. Goddess for Pgh CASA! My people, my people.. There’s so much to say about how I got “here” but let me just tell you I’m having a full circle moment. Teaching Dance is Like Riding a Bicycle for Me. Everybody knows I love dance. But I haven’t really been dancing in a while. It all started in June 2009 when my back went out (when I had just started teaching a “Poetry for Dancers” class at the Hill Dance Academy Theatre, wherein we were to write and perform. *sigh*).   We Dance. We Write. We Dance. And, I mean, my back went OUT. AND my doctor was out of town. AND I didn’t have full health insurance. Yeah… As I lay there crying in week two, I was thinking of all of the opportunities I had to take dance classes, attend dance conferences and didn’t because of one work-related task or another....

Our Petition to Bring Back the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency

By Dr. Goddess May 04, 2011
Our Petition to Bring Back the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency  Consumer Activism Afrobella's Note to Kohl's   Kohl's Halloween Offerings       Media Activism The online world is so fascinating; and when our desires, technology and advocacy come together, we can change the world, large and small. So, some of us are trying to bring back the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, which premiered on HBO with Jill Scott and Anika Noni Rose. The show is engaging, interesting, set in Botswana and I found it absolutely refreshing TV. I already love HBO, this made me love them even more. Plus, I love Jilly from Philly and our girl, the first Black Disney Princess, Anika Noni Rose, so all of this works well together! Please click here to sign the Twitter petition to Bring Back the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency! (we’ve found that Twitter works very well for direct contact...

A Giveaway on August Wilson’s Birthday

By Dr. Goddess Apr 27, 2011
A Giveaway on August Wilson's Birthday Happy Birthday, August Wilson! Folks, it’s one of my favorite playwrights (and family members’) birthday! Now, truth be told, I always missed August Wilson’s birthday because, like the names April, June and May, I always thought he was born in August, hence his name, so every August I was looking to say “Happy Birthday” and was late every time. Every. Time. SMH. There’s so much to say about August Wilson and his work but I’m not trying to mourn today, I want to celebrate! So, I’ll start off my saying Thank You to Medgar Evers College for focusing upon the works of August Wilson at their Annual Black Writers’ Conference.   The National Black Writers Conference at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn August Wilson was born in Pittsburgh, PA in 1945. He was very poor, one of six...

Happy Birthday, Mommy! aka “Ms. Freedom”

By Dr. Goddess Apr 16, 2011
Happy Birthday, Mommy! aka "Ms. Freedom" Mom's Birthday Cake 2008 Today is my Mother’s birthday. Just typing that makes me want to cry. I want to share some things about her (you, Mommy), if you all don’t mind… I know it’s cliche’ to talk about your Mother and to say how special she is; but I really don’t know a more beautiful person than my Mother. She just exudes beauty and I honestly don’t know how I will ever be able to measure up to her radiant light, her open heart, her forgiving spirit, deep compassion and active, unconditional love. Ms. Freda in the Hill by Erin Perry (photographer) Allow me to share a few examples. You see, my Mother is not like Janie’s grandmother in Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God. She has never, ever pulled my horizon in. She never specifically told me to “jump at de...
