Tune In on MSNBC!
I wrote the article entitled, “A Black Woman’s Life of the Mind is Her Own” for Ebony.com and received a great deal of feedback. Thankfully, it was published on the same day that Dr. Melissa Harris-Perry engaged in a “Mad Free” curated event at the Brooklyn Museum by Michaela Angela Davis. Further, it was but one day prior to the debut of “Melissa Harris-Perry,” her new show on MSNBC.
The synergy led to a discussion on Twitter about the Ebony article, the live-tweeting of the #MadFree event at the Brooklyn Museum, a post-event discussion and a focused debate between myself (@DrGoddess) and Dr. Imani Perry (@ImaniPerry), a Princeton professor and a noted protege’ of Dr. Cornel West, as well as a scholar-activist in her own right.

Meet Black Pete, Dutch Santa’s Helper
Greetings Everyone,
I’m reprinting an article from a colleague because we both used to write or Africana.com, it was sold to AOL Black Voices and, well, our articles disappeared.
But it’s Christmas time and you’ll see that understanding the Dutch, Sinterklaas and Black Pete will be well worth your time. History is important, especially when the Dutch get all ahistorical (see: Rihanna Gives Heat to Jackie Magazine for Their Racist Dutch Oven).

Rihanna Gives Jackie Magazine Heat for Their Racist Dutch Oven
This is NOT an Error
Once upon a time, yet another international magazine decided to print racist / white supremacist words and imagery regarding a Black artist and then issue an “oops, did we do that?” apology, as if that would be enough to make protestors go away. Well, both @thefashionbomb and @theybf wrote blogs here and here (with a followup here) to let everyone know about it. There was also an Afro-European Blog that sent me their link later on but I appreciate it! Then @luvvieig wrote one of her stern letters, which I love, basically asking what Queen Latifah asked a long time ago—Who You Callin’ a [N*ggab*tch]?!! .
Oh yeah, the editor first said we were all being too sensitive, then later apologized on Facebook like this:
Dear readers, first of all: thanks for all your responses. We of course huge... Posted in Activism, Art, Ask Dr. Goddess, Featured, Politics, Social Media, Travel, TV Read More

He Was Heavy and Our Brother: RIP Dwight D. Myers
Heavy D
It’s still unbelievable and, in so many ways, it shouldn’t be.
As I wrote in my previous post about my own undergraduate mentor, Dr. Rudolph P. Byrd, this must be the season when giants fall. Rapper, dancer, actor, human being extraordinaire, Dwight D. Myers aka Heavy D has been the latest to be taken from us—and it hurts, bad. I am so tired of crying, so tired of the heartache, I’m not entirely sure what to do. I suppose that’s why we writers write. And, I mean, I didn’t even know Heavy D. I never even met the man, yet he is one of the more meaningful men that have graced my life. And I do mean graced.
My body walks through the 21st century but much of my spirit is living in the 80s and Heavy D’s music is peppered throughout the soundtrack.
I’ve been a dancer since seven years old,... Posted in Activism, Art, Ask Dr. Goddess, Featured, Politics, Social Media, TV Read More
Justice May Come for Aiyana Jones
Aiyana Jones, Dead at Seven Years Old
Sometimes, justice takes a long time. Hopefully, we are just beginning to get justice for Aiyana Jones, Jerean Blake and communities who continue to be terrorized by violence and police negligence, and then mocked by Reality TV. Today, The Huffington Post reports a series of new events surrounding this case, including the indictment of a Detroit police officer, charges of obstruction of justice and perjury for a Reality TV producer, and, sadly, the charging of Charles Jones with first degree murder, for aiding and abetting in the death of teenager, Jerean Blake, with Chauncey Owens, who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in April.
Many of us were completely horrified by the death of Aiyana Jones in Detroit, Michigan; and then we soon realized that there were many layers to how and why she died,... Posted in Activism, Ask Dr. Goddess, Featured, Politics, Social Media, TV Read More
Toure Debate Leads to Post-Blackness Stalker Accusations
Once upon a time, a Goddess tried to get to bed early, for a change, and decided to tweet a fellow Pittsburgher about “Dance Moms.”
Amazingly, this led to an appalling exchange with college acquaintance, Toure, and having stalking accusations launched against her—by him.
How did all of this start?
Toure
In an effort to promote his forthcoming book, “Who’s Afraid of Post-Blackness,” Toure posted a video introduction on YouTube describing an incident in college, at Emory University, in which he described being told by another Black man that he was not Black. Well, Dr. Goddess was there during that incident and, upon viewing the video promotion, addressed the backstory here.
There’s nothing wrong with writing or book selling; but don’t perpetrate a fraud, dwell in “Black pathology”... Posted in Activism, Art, Ask Dr. Goddess, Featured, Politics, Social Media, TV Read More
