Farewell, Dr. Rudolph P. Byrd

By Dr. Goddess Oct 23, 2011
Farewell, Dr. Rudolph P. Byrd Dr. Rudolph P. Byrd This must be the season for giants to be laid to rest. I was still working on refining the 4,000 words I had already written about the moments Law Professor Derrick A. Bell and I shared and the impact of his presence upon me, when I received a phone call on October 3 that would change my life, again. This time it was from my BFF, Tiyi Morris, telling me that our mentor and advisor, Dr. Rudolph P. Byrd, had taken medical leave of Emory University due to losing his battle with (multiple myeloma) cancer and was home receiving “palliative care.” I had to look up the word “palliative” in the dictionary, although I sensed it meant a horrible conclusion, however so defined. I was given a link to a blog wherein we could write our farewells to Dr. Byrd, as phone calls and house visits would drain him of...

Problematic Pontificating on Planking with P. Diddy’s Poprah

By Dr. Goddess Jul 01, 2011
Problematic Pontificating on Planking with P. Diddy's Poprah   Planking   Planking I love planking. It may also be the devil. In an amazing feat, planking has caused a gigantic rumor mill to spin a tale of its supposed origins in slavery and/or the narrative that it is “a racist term”. Nothing can be more ridiculous; but the retweeting of slave ships with folks asking, “still think it’s funny?”continues, unabated, on Twitter and Facebook. Um, yes. I do. For the most part, planking is silly and funny and so many other things. Article forthcoming… But last night, the strangest thing happened when I saw ongoing tweets from “Poprah” (of Work for Diddy 1 & 2 fame) repeatedly requesting that the Black press, in particular, “tell the truth” and “the whole story” about the slave origins of planking. I was tired of...

Ask a Sista at Netroots Nation!

By Dr. Goddess Jun 17, 2011
Ask a Sista at Netroots Nation! Dr. Goddess is Speaking!!   Ask a Sista Panel (L to R: Chloe, Janee, Zerlina, Jenifer, Dr. Goddess and Cheryl) fstv2 on livestream.com. Broadcast Live Free Mi Gente, I love Netroots Nation. When I was asked to be a part of a panel at Netroots Nation in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 2009, I had no idea my life would be changed (again). We were talking Hip Hop and Politics with Rev. Yearwood of the Hip Hop Caucus, Davey D of Hard Knock Radio, Paradise Gray of X-Clan, Jasiri X of Real Talk XPress and, yours truly, Dr. Goddess of the Revelations Blog and Dr. Goddess Arts, Education and Management Co. (academics always pick long titles, forgive us!). Our panel was phenomenal, as was the entire conference of progressive folks who work online and offline to improve the human race. 2010 in Las Vegas was even better because I understood...

Twitter Beef in Blackademia Begets Broader Barack Obama Debate

By Dr. Goddess May 18, 2011
Twitter Beef in Blackademia Begets Broader Barack Obama Debate   @InnyVinny's Brown Twitter Birds Don't Die, they Multiply! I love Twitter. There’s nothing else like it at the moment. This particular Twitter Beef has been going on for well over a year and it all started at Princeton University, with inter-office politics in the Department of Africana Studies. There are so many layers to this story and I don’t portend to know (or even care about) every angle. Today, however, a fuller debate carried over onto Twitter from Television, which is both odd and, as an aside, the source of much of the problem. I decided to “chirpstory” it because I believe that the Twitter discussion, overall, is better than any one individual’s timeline and there is much learning to be had. View it for yourself. I embedded it here because I really want your commentary. I want to...

The Life of the Mind: “For Colored Girls” Review Part I

By Dr. Goddess Feb 17, 2011
The Life of the Mind: "For Colored Girls" Review Part I For Colored Girls Poster Art Folks, This is my entree into Vlogging and the launch of a series I’m calling “The Life of the Mind with Dr. Goddess” (copyright 2011) . The phrase, “the life of the mind” is in reference to persons involved in academia and/or persons committed to a lifetime of intellectual engagement. I’ve broadened this, of course, to include anyone with a critical (and preferably, beautiful) mind. The Backstory: I walked into a relative’s home, saw the poster, lost my mind and whipped out a camera. Any questions? I’ll be posting a full blog on Tyler Perry’s 34th Street Film, “For Colored Girls” (based upon Ntozake Shange’s choreopoem, For Colored Girls Who’ve Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Was Enuff) but please let me know what you think...

Sloganeering and Slacktivism: The No Wedding, No Womb Campaign

By Dr. Goddess Sep 30, 2010
The multimedia campaign, “No Wedding, No Womb” debuted on my brother’s birthday (Hey Paul!) and while I was in D.C. feeling bad that I had not properly prepared to send my brother a card to make sure it arrived on his actual birthday (My bad, Paul!), a girlfriend asked me if I had heard of the “Movement” and if I knew one of the bloggers participating. I knew nothing of the campaign but I admit the title, alone, made me chuckle. I started seeing murmurings and the uproar about “No Wedding, No Womb” (NWNW) on Twitter and still did not understand because I did not make the time to do so. I was still reeling from having attended Ron Walter’s funeral, as well as participating as a poet in the Furious Flower Poetry Center’s Tribute to Lucille Clifton, after responding to an invitation from Nikki Giovanni and Dr. Joanne...

To Be or Not To Be: Revisiting the Ebonics Controversy

By Dr. Goddess Aug 24, 2010
To Be or Not To Be: Revisiting the Ebonics Controversy Please understand that we realize that all these he-be’s, sheb-e’s and we-be’s Can cause, for connoisseurs of speech, to get the hee-bee-gee-bees But after all, if you don’t be and they don’t be… who do? So allow us to personify and conjugate the verb, “to be”—for you We’re the Human Being band! “WeB. Doinit”,  Quincy Jones, Back on the Block I love you, Quincy! This is one of my all-time favorite albums! I promise you that I don’t set out to create controversy. I really don’t. So, what had happened was… Jamelle Bouie (@jbouie) tweeted the link to her excellent, intelligent response here in The American Prospect, to what was apparently yet another dumb, journalistic response (this time, Frank James) posting yet another dumb response to an issue of...
