Tune In on MSNBC!
I wrote the article entitled, “A Black Woman’s Life of the Mind is Her Own” for Ebony.com and received a great deal of feedback. Thankfully, it was published on the same day that Dr. Melissa Harris-Perry engaged in a “Mad Free” curated event at the Brooklyn Museum by Michaela Angela Davis. Further, it was but one day prior to the debut of “Melissa Harris-Perry,” her new show on MSNBC.
The synergy led to a discussion on Twitter about the Ebony article, the live-tweeting of the #MadFree event at the Brooklyn Museum, a post-event discussion and a focused debate between myself (@DrGoddess) and Dr. Imani Perry (@ImaniPerry), a Princeton professor and a noted protege’ of Dr. Cornel West, as well as a scholar-activist in her own right.

“I love myself when I am laughing, and then again when I am looking mean and impressive.” — Zora Neale Hurston
Anthropologist, Writer, Novelist, Storyteller, Playwright, Dancer, Southerner Extraordinaire, Zora Neale Hurston, was born on January 7, 1891.
She was a phenomenal woman, a renaissance woman, a fierce woman, artist and human being.
So, naturally, Twitter celebrated her birthday with glee.
Enjoy…

Meet Black Pete, Dutch Santa’s Helper
Greetings Everyone,
I’m reprinting an article from a colleague because we both used to write or Africana.com, it was sold to AOL Black Voices and, well, our articles disappeared.
But it’s Christmas time and you’ll see that understanding the Dutch, Sinterklaas and Black Pete will be well worth your time. History is important, especially when the Dutch get all ahistorical (see: Rihanna Gives Heat to Jackie Magazine for Their Racist Dutch Oven).

Farewell, Dr. Rudolph P. Byrd
Dr. Rudolph P. Byrd
This must be the season for giants to be laid to rest.
I was still working on refining the 4,000 words I had already written about the moments Law Professor Derrick A. Bell and I shared and the impact of his presence upon me, when I received a phone call on October 3 that would change my life, again. This time it was from my BFF, Tiyi Morris, telling me that our mentor and advisor, Dr. Rudolph P. Byrd, had taken medical leave of Emory University due to losing his battle with (multiple myeloma) cancer and was home receiving “palliative care.” I had to look up the word “palliative” in the dictionary, although I sensed it meant a horrible conclusion, however so defined.
I was given a link to a blog wherein we could write our farewells to Dr. Byrd, as phone calls and house visits would drain him of... Posted in Activism, Featured, Politics, Scholarship Read More
Problematic Pontificating on Planking with P. Diddy’s Poprah
Planking
Planking
I love planking.
It may also be the devil.
In an amazing feat, planking has caused a gigantic rumor mill to spin a tale of its supposed origins in slavery and/or the narrative that it is “a racist term”. Nothing can be more ridiculous; but the retweeting of slave ships with folks asking, “still think it’s funny?”continues, unabated, on Twitter and Facebook.
Um, yes. I do. For the most part, planking is silly and funny and so many other things. Article forthcoming…
But last night, the strangest thing happened when I saw ongoing tweets from “Poprah” (of Work for Diddy 1 & 2 fame) repeatedly requesting that the Black press, in particular, “tell the truth” and “the whole story” about the slave origins of planking.
I was tired of... Posted in Art, Ask Dr. Goddess, Contests, Featured, Politics, Scholarship, Social Media Read More

Mi Gente,
I love Netroots Nation.
When I was asked to be a part of a panel at Netroots Nation in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 2009, I had no idea my life would be changed (again). We were talking Hip Hop and Politics with Rev. Yearwood of the Hip Hop Caucus, Davey D of Hard Knock Radio, Paradise Gray of X-Clan, Jasiri X of Real Talk XPress and, yours truly, Dr. Goddess of the Revelations Blog and Dr. Goddess Arts, Education and Management Co. (academics always pick long titles, forgive us!). Our panel was phenomenal, as was the entire conference of progressive folks who work online and offline to improve the human race.

Twitter Beef in Blackademia Begets Broader Barack Obama Debate
@InnyVinny's Brown Twitter Birds Don't Die, they Multiply!
I love Twitter. There’s nothing else like it at the moment.
This particular Twitter Beef has been going on for well over a year and it all started at Princeton University, with inter-office politics in the Department of Africana Studies. There are so many layers to this story and I don’t portend to know (or even care about) every angle. Today, however, a fuller debate carried over onto Twitter from Television, which is both odd and, as an aside, the source of much of the problem. I decided to “chirpstory” it because I believe that the Twitter discussion, overall, is better than any one individual’s timeline and there is much learning to be had. View it for yourself. I embedded it here because I really want your commentary. I want to... Posted in Activism, Politics, Scholarship, TV Read More
