Kicking Dirt on Kwanzaa

By Dr. Goddess Dec 26, 2011
Kicking Dirt on Kwanzaa Kwanzaa Time This article was originally published in December, 2003. It never fails. Every single year for the past six years, at least, I have witnessed the consistent pattern. On or before Dec. 26, the first day of Kwanzaa, someone will send me an anti-Kwanzaa editorial published, you guessed it, just in time for the holiday season! At all times, the conclusion is the same–there is no real or valid reason to celebrate Kwanzaa. This year’s offering was written by Debra Dickerson, journalist, lifetime overachiever and author of “An American Story.” Her article entitled, “A Case of the Kwanzaa Blues” appeared in The New York Times opinion section Dec. 26. This article is my response. At the very least, she begins her essay with a more balanced approach than most– admitting that all holidays are...

Are People of Color Occupying Wallstreet?

By Dr. Goddess Nov 30, 2011
REUTERS / Mike Segar - Occupy Minnesota   Are People of Color Participating in Occupy Wallstreet or any of the Occupy Movements around North America, in particular? A series of focused discussions on the role of people of color engaged in #OccupyWallstreet are captured here on Twitter. Lots of great ideas, questions and even solutions are provided. They’re only related by topic. Not all of the persons involved were even tweeting to the others. Just keep that in mind as you read the Twitter feed. What do you think? What would help you become more involved in the Occupy Movement? How would you like to see it evolve in the future? Did you like this? Share...

Help Dr. Goddess Help Ms. Freedom

By Dr. Goddess Jun 25, 2011
Help Dr. Goddess Help Ms. Freedom They say “A friend in need is a friend, indeed” eh? Well… For those who’d like to meet my Mom, you can read about how phenomenal she is here when I wished her a Happy Birthday. Ms. Freedom was in a car accident and I need your help now.   "Ms. Freda" by Erin Perry I love this picture and it will be used in “She Put a Hammer in My Hand”. My mother’s story is the basis of my next play, which is entitled, “She Put a Hammer in My Hand”. She is a Handy Ma’am who built up our home when my brother and I were children; but she is older and less strong now, so her eyes are bigger than what her body can physically complete for a construction project. The investment she made in her home—and us—drives me to complete this project for her, so she can live out the...

Come Flash Mob Dance with Dr. Goddess for Pgh CASA!

By Dr. Goddess May 07, 2011
Come Flash Mob Dance with Dr. Goddess for Pgh CASA! My people, my people.. There’s so much to say about how I got “here” but let me just tell you I’m having a full circle moment. Teaching Dance is Like Riding a Bicycle for Me. Everybody knows I love dance. But I haven’t really been dancing in a while. It all started in June 2009 when my back went out (when I had just started teaching a “Poetry for Dancers” class at the Hill Dance Academy Theatre, wherein we were to write and perform. *sigh*).   We Dance. We Write. We Dance. And, I mean, my back went OUT. AND my doctor was out of town. AND I didn’t have full health insurance. Yeah… As I lay there crying in week two, I was thinking of all of the opportunities I had to take dance classes, attend dance conferences and didn’t because of one work-related task or another....

Michael Moore Premieres “Capitalism: A Love Story” in The Burgh!

By Dr. Goddess Sep 15, 2009
The AFL-CIO Conference is here and at the last minute, they were able to get Michael Moore to do the world premiere of his new documentary, “Capitalism: A Love Story”. He said it’s the culmination of his 20 years of filmmaking—and it shows. As usual, Moore interlaces old film clips and commercials in between his poignant observations and commentary on contemporary events. The use of older Westerns prove to be some of the most hilarious scenes, especially one, in particular that demonstrates Ronald Reagan’s response to the Women’s Rights Movement. But what I most love about Moore’s “Capitalism…” is, ironically, what I most love about HBO’s “True Blood” series. In the end, it’s a heartfelt engagement, dialogue and challenge to that which we hold most...

Pat Ford Blows the Whistle As He Resigns

By Dr. Goddess Aug 28, 2008
Honestly, this letter of resignation speaks for itself. All I want to know, Mr. Ford is: 1. What happened the day the planning commission passed the plans for the Arena? 2. What happened the day the August Wilson home was supposed to go up for its Historic Designation (the first time)? 3. What else was being said when no one else was around? Thanks.
