Mi Gente,

I love Netroots Nation.

When I was asked to be a part of a panel at Netroots Nation in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 2009, I had no idea my life would be changed (again). We were talking Hip Hop and Politics with Rev. Yearwood of the Hip Hop Caucus, Davey D of Hard Knock Radio, Paradise Gray of X-Clan, Jasiri X of Real Talk XPress and, yours truly, Dr. Goddess of the Revelations Blog and Dr. Goddess Arts, Education and Management Co. (academics always pick long titles, forgive us!). Our panel was phenomenal, as was the entire conference of progressive folks who work online and offline to improve the human race.

2010 in Las Vegas was even better because I understood Netroots, got my footing and organized and moderated a panel entitled, “Tweeting the Revolution: How Hip Hop Transformed 140 into 360″. I almost panicked because some of my panelists couldn’t make it but all you have is your word and your reputation, so I carried on and the panel was great with Elon James White and Davey D where we broke down Twitter and explained “Black Twitter” for a lot of folks for the first time.

Backstory:

I also took some Democracy for America trainings and received my certificate for online advocacy! Yay! One day, in the hallway, I ran into a woman named Jenifer Daniels, who carried the title, “the friendraiser”. I asked her what it meant, she politely explained it to me and we had a great conversation, followed each other on Twitter and maintained a relationship. We were both planning respective panels for Netroots Nation 2011 when she approached myself and Zerlina Maxwell, previous Obama campaign worker, writer, law student and also a Netroots 2010 attendee, about organizing a panel made of Black women that could be something called, “ask a black lady.” I offered an amendment and suggested “Ask a Sista”, they loved it and voila! Ask a Sista: Black Women Muse on Politics, Policy, Pop Culture and Scholarship was born! As an aside, neither my panel nor Jenifer’s panel were accepted for Netroots but what we did together on “Ask a Sista” WAS! Go Figure! It must have been written in the stars…

Fast Forward:

Now, it’s 2011 and we’re in Minneapolis, MN, the home of Prince. I suggested he be a keynote speaker for Netroots but they weren’t tryna hear me and I just don’t know why! But even better, I’m with my sisters and we organized, “Ask a Sista: Black Women Muse on Politics, Policy, Pop Culture and Scholarship” and you already know who had a hand in that long title but we’re not gonna talk about it. Isn’t it right up your alley? Aren’t you tired of hearing people talk about us, around us, away from us and rarely TO us? And if and when they do, with the exception of a few Sistas, they are never talking to people who actually know what they’re talking about and are speaking from present-day experience. Lawd!

Well, this week at Netroots Nation is your lucky week. We are debuting, “Ask a Sista” at 4;30pm Central / 5:30pm Eastern in L100AB at the Minneapolis Convention Center
